Selecting the Right Coring Motor: Wet vs. Dry Drilling Solutions

guidance on choosing between wet and dry diamond coring motors for concrete, reinforced concrete, brick, and masonry drilling applications

AGP DMC6P Wet & Dry Diamond Coring Motor

How does one Choose Between Wet and Dry Diamond Coring Motors?

Choose a wet coring motor for drilling reinforced concrete, and choose a dry coring motor for drilling brick or similar relatively soft materials.

Wet drilling and dry drilling are substantially different processes, and they have very different rpm requirements. In general, wet drilling requires more power for a given diameter, more downforce, and a much slower linear speed (m/s). Dry drilling requires less power, light downforce, and much higher linear speed. In addition, dry drilling is better with a vacuum cleaner and works much better if there is a soft percussion function. Standard dry drilling motors and bits are not suitable for drilling reinforced concrete. This means that any given machine will need to have different gear ratios and other features to perform either wet or dry drilling. Even machines which can drill both wet and dry, will still be optimized for one of the two. For example, the DMC6, with its convertible vacuum dust port, can drill dry, but it is still primarily designed for wet drilling. While the DM52, with its soft percussion function and higher speeds is primarily designed for dry drilling of brick, but it can be used with water feed for small diameter wet drilling if desired. Note that there are also special coring motors made for dry drilling reinforced concrete as well as hybrid coring motors which can drill reinforced concrete both dry and wet.

How can we determine which coring motor is best suited for our reinforced concrete drilling projects?

AGP's technical expertise distinguishes between wet and dry drilling applications to match your project requirements. Wet drilling for reinforced concrete requires higher power, greater downforce, and slower linear speeds, while dry drilling suits brick and soft materials with lighter loads and higher speeds. Our engineers provide detailed guidance on motor selection, gear ratios, and operational features to optimize your drilling efficiency and equipment performance. Contact AGP to discuss your specific concrete drilling challenges and receive a customized equipment recommendation.

AGP manufactures versatile coring solutions designed to meet diverse drilling requirements across global construction and masonry markets. While some machines offer convertible capabilities—such as the DMC6 with its convertible vacuum dust port for dry drilling—they remain optimized for their primary application. For contractors requiring maximum flexibility, AGP also produces specialized dry coring motors specifically designed for reinforced concrete, plus hybrid coring motors capable of drilling reinforced concrete in both wet and dry conditions. Selecting the right coring motor from AGP's comprehensive product line ensures your team has -grade equipment that delivers consistent performance, meets international certifications (CE, CB, CSA), and provides the reliability needed for demanding construction projects worldwide.
