A smarter safety system that detects dangerous tool rotation and stops the motor before injuries happen

Sudden core bit jamming is one of the most serious hazards in hand-held diamond core drilling. When a bit binds, the resulting torque reaction can cause the tool to rotate violently, putting the operator at risk of losing control or suffering injury.
The RotaGuard System, developed by AGP, is designed to address this risk directly. As a first-of-its-kind solution in the industry, it adds an intelligent layer of protection alongside existing systems such as the mechanical clutch, overload protection, and LED load warning lamp.


Why Traditional Protection Isn't Enough

Conventional safety features each serve a purpose, but they have limitations. The mechanical clutch, for example, primarily protects the tool rather than the operator. Its slipping torque varies depending on the gear ratio. In first gear, many hand-held drill motors can generate more torque than an operator can safely resist before the clutch engages. This means the operator may still be exposed to significant force during a bind-up.

For this reason, instruction manuals often recommend avoiding first gear in hand-held operation. However, in real-world conditions, operators may still encounter situations where additional protection is needed.

How RotaGuard Works

RotaGuard introduces a new level of active safety. Using an integrated sensor, the system continuously monitors the tool's movement. If it detects a sudden, abnormal rotation, such as the rapid twist caused by core bit jamming, it immediately shuts off the motor, even if the trigger is still being pressed.

Importantly, the system is designed to distinguish between normal handling and dangerous events. Small or controlled movements do not trigger a shutdown. Only when rotation exceeds a defined threshold will the system activate, preventing unnecessary interruptions while ensuring protection when it matters most.

What Happens During a Drill Jamming incident

When RotaGuard activates, the motor is cut off instantly.
If the operator maintains a firm grip, the tool will typically stop after rotating about 90 degrees or less. If the tool is released, it may continue to spin briefly due to inertia. However, because power has already been shut off, it is no longer actively running; significantly reducing the risk of injury.
This rapid response helps:
•Reduce the likelihood of wrist and arm injuries
•Improve control during unexpected bind-ups
•Increase operator confidence in demanding applications

Improved Mechanical Clutch Life

The mechanical clutch inside the gearbox wears with every slip cycle, eventually requiring servicing to restore its performance.
Since the RotaGuard system often kicks in before the mechanical clutch does, it delivers a meaningful improvement in clutch life.

No technology can replace proper training, safe working practices, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. However, RotaGuard represents a meaningful advancement in diamond coring safety.
